Editor and Contributing Writer, Samin Sharum, ‘A Hundred Ways to Erect a Hoarding’, Published by Suburbia Projects
Set against Dubai’s ever-evolving skyline, A Hundred Ways to Erect a Hoarding examines construction site hoardings as both physical and psychological boundaries. Through daily observations, the book blends documentation with visual experimentation, offering a perspective on these temporary barriers.
Authored by Shamin Sharum with contributions from various writers and edited by Amanda Ariawan, the book explores hoardings as symbols that evoke a range of emotions and meanings. Combining essays with imagery—both photographed and AI-generated—the publication reinterprets these structures, questioning how they shape perceptions of urban transformation.
In her essay, Resisting the Algorithm, Re-imagining Identity, Amanda reflects on how Al shapes identity and reinforces biases through homogenised views by exploring the works of artists Morehshin Allahyari and Dr. Heather Dewey-Hagborg. She highlights creative resistance against Als constraints and underscores the need for constant critical engagement with Al to honour human diversity.
