Gallery Associate, Ahmet Öğüt, History Otherwise, solo exhibition, Wei-Ling Contemporary
Venue: Wei-Ling Contemporary, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Date: 19 Feb – 24 April 2020
History Otherwise marks Ahmet Öğüt’s first-ever solo exhibition in Malaysia, aiming to challenge our ways of knowing and understanding the world. This exhibition unveils history through the perspective of the “subaltern” – revealing the realities that we often overlook, or consider invisible. It proposes and explores the questions: Who should write the global history? Who is it destined for? How do artists take part in remapping the connectedness of the world?
The exhibition attempts to alter the Eurocentric viewpoint on history through the perspective of “subaltern” by showcasing four works of art of various medium: tapestry, mail art, drawings, and video. Through the perspectives of many characters and societies, each work tells stories that influence our present while posing fundamental queries about history as we know it.
As a Gallery Associate of History Otherwise, Amanda worked closely with the artist. Her role ensured smooth exhibition planning, supported the alignment of artistic vision with research-driven insights for a thoughtful and cohesive curation, and managed the technical aspects of the exhibition with an experimental, critical, and inclusive approach, fostering engaging and meaningful experiences and dialogues around contemporary art.
