Writer, Confronting Oppression: On Art, Genocide and Collective Memory, An essay on Hamidi Hadi’s new series, Trembling in Silence (2024), Published by Wei-Ling Gallery
Trembling in Silence is a solo exhibition by Malaysian artist Hamidi Hadi held in Wei-Ling Gallery from 6 to 27 April 2024. The exhibition explored the complexities of human emotion and vulnerability in turbulent times. Building on themes from his previous work, Hamidi delves deeper into anxiety and fragility, reflecting on isolation and global unrest. His latest works incorporate tapestries and carpets marked with deliberate burns, symbolising fractured homelands, displacement, and lost legacies. Inspired by Rumi’s reflections on the ego as a barrier, Hamidi’s introspective journey manifests in raw, evocative expressions of resilience and uncertainty.
“The artist initially made the work in response to his intimate struggles, yet along the making he found himself deeply impacted by the unfolding events that shape the reality we live in today. His reflections on the violence taking place in various places in the world gradually led the work towards a new direction, which delves into the exploration between art and society.”
